UNITED STATES – As reported in an online news article by www.thefix.com, the FDA has raised concerns about CBD products and potential unsubstantiated health claims to consumers.

CBD and other cannabis products are becoming increasingly popular across the United States. However, while there are countless CBD products on the market that make various health claims to consumers, these products have not been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

CBD products are still legal; however, the FDA cannot assess the safety and effectiveness of the products for use in treating certain medical conditions without the presence of data obtained from research and studies.  To obtain FDA approval, products must undergo extensive testing to demonstrate their safety and effectiveness.

The FDA is particularly concerned about CBD products that make specific health claims that have not yet been backed up by scientific studies and other evidence.  While some health claims may be true, there simply is not enough data to show one way or another that CBD products help to treat certain medical conditions in both humans and pets, including generalized pain, headaches, and anxiety, among other common health conditions.

The FDA is in the process of investigating and researching the safety of CBD and other cannabis products to obtain the necessary information needed to create regulations.  Currently, the anti-seizure drug “Epidiolex” is the only CBD product to be approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of epilepsy.

The FDA asserts that additional testing and information is needed to evaluate medical claims made to consumers about other CBD products.  Until the FDA has the necessary information about CBD and its effects on humans and animals, the agency is urging consumers to be cautious before purchasing CBD and using the product to treat medical conditions.
