Baby walker safety challenges
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Baby walkers branded as Kids & Koala fail to comply with the safety regulations enforced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Consequently, the CPSC published a notice recalling the Kids & Koalas walkers for babies. The CPSC says that the walkers under recall can glide through a doorway and were not designed with the proper safety mechanisms to stop the walker at the edge of a stair as required by U.S. safety regulations according to babygaga.com. The CPSC considers the Kids & Koalas walkers to be a hazardous device for children based on the risk of falling and the possibility a child could become entrapped in the child’s seat, which could lead to strangulation or suffocation.
Amazon sold approximately 3,600 Kids & Koalas baby walkers that are now subject to a product recall. A baby walker must not fit through a doorway, and further, must have a device that stops the walker at the edge of a stair so that the walker does not tumble down the staircase with a child inside. Additionally, the CPSC noted that the child’s seat is also defective. The agency reported that the leg holes are too broad. A child could slip through one of the leg holes and become entangled in the seat by the head. The child could strangle to death were that to happen.
Amazon offered the recalled walkers for sale from September of 2017 until July of 2018. The Kids & Koalas walker was manufactured by a Chinese company called Utomen. The recalled walkers were available in several solid colors such as black, pink, green, gray, white, and blue. The model number of the recalled item is X002 and can be found on a tag underneath the seat.
Amazon will contact consumers who purchased the recalled product by email and provide instructions to return the defective and dangerous product. Amazon is offering a full refund.
