Hepatitis A Virus in East Farmingdale Restaurant. Customers who drank a beverage at Trento restaurant in East Farmingdale on Long Island, in mid to late July, may have been at risk for Hepatitis A, the Suffolk County Health Services Department announced.
The dates in question when a worker at the restaurant had the infectious virus, potentially exposing others who drank beverages there, are July 19, 23, 26, 29, or 30, said the Health Services Department.
According to Newsday, the severity of illness may be lessened as well as completely prevented by treatment, when given within two weeks of exposure. A vaccine or immune globulin was offered on July 29 or 30 to those people who had beverages at Trento, the department said.
For those people who were possibly exposed to the virus before July 29, preventive treatment was not recommended, according to the department. It was advised those people consult a physician if they become sick, reports Newsday.
Hepatitis A is an inflammation of the liver and is caused by the hepatitis A virus. An infected person may spread the virus by handling food or drink when others consume those products.
Hepatitis A is highly contagious and is a “self-limited disease” that does not result in chronic infection. according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Over 80 percent of adults with Hepatitis A have symptoms, but the majority of children do not have symptoms or have an unrecognized infection. Antibodies produced in response to Hepatitis A last for life and protect against reinfection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
