BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA – According to an online news article published by www.kplctv.com, a third company has recalled dog pig ear treats amid concerns of potential salmonella contamination.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced the recall of several lots of a third brand of dog pig ear treats sold under the name “Chef Toby Pig Ears,” and manufactured by Dog Goods USA LLC.
The FDA, along with the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and health officials in multiple states are investigating the affected lot of pig ears to determine if they can be directly linked to human cases of salmonellosis.
The CDC is advising consumers not to buy any brand of dog pig ear treats nor use any previously purchased dog pig ear treats. In total, 127 people have been infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella, spanning across 33 states, including 1 person in Louisiana. According to the CDC, 26 people have been hospitalized, and 24 of the ill people are children under the age of 5.
Dog Goods USA LLC purchased the dog pig ear treats from a single supplier in Brazil between September 2018 and August 2019. The treats were distributed throughout the United States, according to the FDA. The FDA obtained and tested a sample of the dog pig ear treats from the Brazilian supplier, which tested positive for salmonella.
