LONDON, U.K. — American lawyers stood before Parliament and told English lawmakers that Monsanto doctored studies it relies on to maintain their claim that glyphosate, the main active ingredient in Roundup weed killer, does not cause cancer. The lawyers made their presentation to the governing body of the United Kingdom on September 5, 2018, according to Euractiv.com.Almost 8,700 claims against Monsanto remain pending in courts across the United States.
A jury in San Francisco awarded Dwayne Johnson, a man who fell ill from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using an herbicide containing glyphosate. The plaintiff claimed, and the jury believed, that glyphosate caused the man’s cancer and that Monsanto knew that glyphosate is a carcinogen despite repeated denials. Monsanto fought hard to keep a substantial amount of damning evidence away from the jury which showed that Monsanto tried covering up the connection between glyphosate and cancer.
The depths to which Monsanto sank to bury the link between long-term exposure to glyphosate and cancer is appalling. A French professor published a study in 2012 which demonstrated a convention between Roundup exposure and cancer. The study was not well received in scientific circles, butit caused a stir. Photographs of the research subjects — white lab rats— with tumors approaching the size of baseballs. The publication in which the study received publication, under extreme pressure from Monsanto, retracted the studya year later. Notwithstanding, another publicationpicked up the story and produce it in 2014. In 2016, the French professor won a defamation lawsuit against Monsanto in a French court.
The incident involving the French research scientist is one of many instances in which Monsanto actively participated in adulterating scientific research for their benefit. Attorneys for some of the plaintiffs in the pending legal actions suggest that other judges should allow them to present more evidence of Monsanto’s wrongdoing in their next trials so that the jury can see all that the company has done to protect its most lucrative product.
