E cigarette lawsuits
UNITED STATES – As reported by several news websites, lawsuits related to e-cigarettes are being filed around the country. These lawsuits allege that the device manufacturers are luring children and young adults into nicotine addiction, and that the devices have the propensity to explode.
Though many manufacturers have e-cigarettes and vape pens on the market, Juul Labs Inc. is one of the most widely known. Consumers and parents have started filing lawsuits against this company and other manufactures, alleging that while the devices are marketed as safer options than standard cigarettes, they carry numerous risks and lead to teen addiction.
The lawsuits are generally filed under one or two primary claims. The first of these claims has to do with the nicotine liquid in the vaping pods of the devices. Plaintiffs allege this liquid and inhalation of this liquid is harmful and highly addictive.
The second type of lawsuit has to do with the device itself and the lithium-ion batteries that power the devices. Plaintiffs allege that the batteries are prone to overheating and explosions, causing serious burn injuries to consumers. Reports have even started to surface that e-cigarette battery explosions have caused several deaths.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has taken the position that children should not be using e-cigarettes, and the agency has moved for restrictions on the sale of flavored nicotine products, like flavored Juul pens. The FDA has tried to increase awareness of nicotine and tobacco dangers in youth. The FDA also recently announced that it is looking into the possibility of a link between e-cigarettes and seizures in children and adults.
