Acute respiratory distress syndrome
TOPEKA, Kan. — The sixth person to die from e-cigarette use died in the state of Kansas recently. Kansas state health authorities said that the woman who died from a severe respiratory disease caused by vaping was older than 50-years-of-age with a documented history of serious health concerns. Notwithstanding the woman’s health struggles, her doctors said that vaping accelerated her demise according to NBC News. The evidence in the case of the woman who died suggests that she had only been using e-cigarettes for about one week. Within days, the woman was suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome. She died within days. Health authorities for the state of Kansas admitted that although she had some adverse health conditions, there was nothing they saw that would indicate she could lose her life so quickly to vaping.
Doctors say that the 50-year-old woman died from acute respiratory distress syndrome or ARDS for short. ARDS is a severe medical condition which fills the victim’s lungs with fluid. This sad case is a cautionary tale for older people who use e-cigarette products even though most of the lung illnesses caused by vaping have ranged from teens to people in their 30s. Experts say that people who are living with medical conditions need to be aware that vaping could kill them.
The woman in Kansas who died was the sixth person to succumb to a vaping-related illness. Deaths due to e-cigarettes were recorded in California, Oregon, Minnesota, Indiana, and Illinois. To date, health officials have confirmed 483 cases of vaping illnesses spread out over 39 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The total number of respiratory illnesses increased by over 30 within seven days.
The Congress is now poised to act. Testimony from congressional hearings conclusively proved that representatives for the company known as Juul gave informational talks in high schools across the U.S. promoting Juul as a healthy alternative to cigarette smoking. The FDA strenuously refuted those assertions and demanded Juul to stop marketing its products in that manner.
