Motor vehicle accidents
LEE COUNTY, FL- News-press.com writes that four deadly collisions occurred in Lee County this week, bringing the death toll for 2020 to 80. In the most recent collision, a woman from Arcadia died in an accident between the car in which she was traveling in an SUV. A 29-year-old man from Arcadia was reportedly driving the car at the time of the crash. The victim was a 36-year-old woman. The incident occurred on Interstate 75 in the evening. The driver reportedly failed to slow his vehicle and struck the SUV, which had slowed down due to heavy traffic.
An earlier fatal crash occurred on Interstate 75 in the northbound lanes close to Bonita Beach Road. That incident occurred overnight when the driver was heading southbound. It is not clear who was driving the vehicle at the time of that crash, but a twenty-year-old man and a woman were both in the car at the time. The impact caused both occupants to be ejected from the vehicle, and the female victim died at the scene. Responders transported the man to a nearby hospital.
Another deadly crash took place in the afternoon involving a motorcyclist and a truck. The motorcycle was traveling southbound on US 41 collided with a truck. Reports state that the motorcyclist attempted to stop and avoid the collision but was ejected from his bike and struck the box truck’s side. The impact killed the motorcyclist. A pedestrian crash on Palm Beach Boulevard close to its intersection with Polk Street left one person dead this week as well. Police report that Lee County has now suffered 80 fatal crashes this year.
According to statistics, Florida is among a minority of states in which traffic crashes are continuing to increase each year even as the number of fatalities caused by traffic violence has dropped nationally.
