RUSKIN, FL – According to Tampabay.com, a one-year-old boy was killed when a neighbor, who had just dropped the child off at his home, ran him over with her vehicle.
The reports indicate that the neighbor dropped off the child at about 2 in the afternoon and that he was playing in his family’s front yard. The neighbor then started to drive to her own home, which was next door and the boy was hit by the vehicle. The child was taken to the St. Joseph’s Hospital South where he was declared dead.
Investigators state that the child’s death was an accident and that drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been involved in the incident. As of Wednesday, no charges have been filed against the driver who struck the boy. The authorities have not released the name of the victim.
Many children are killed in driveway accidents. Small children are often difficult to see and can easily end up in a driver’s blind spot. It is not uncommon for these tragic accidents to involve a driver who is a family member or friend of the victim and the victim’s family.
Lawmakers and car manufacturers have been taking steps to reduce the number of these incidents that take place. All newly manufacturers vehicles must be equipped with rear-view cameras. This improvement greatly reduces the blind spot behind vehicles. While there are still blind spots, the area of those spots is greatly reduced, which can hopefully cut down on the number of these accidents that take place every year. Soon, many vehicles may also have technology capable of identifying pedestrians and stopping vehicles before a person is struck.
