Staten Island, NY: A severe motor vehicle accident occurred in New Dorp, New York, on Thursday night. A dashboard camera caught the accident as it happened, and the accident video was uploaded to the Internet. The dashcam video captured a black sedan swerving in front of a car belonging to the dashcam camera owner collided into a different car in the oncoming traffic lane. The accident happened on Wednesday night at approximately 6:15 p.m. The driver and accident witness stated that she was attempting to make a left turn from Hylan onto Tysens Lane. She placed an emergency 911 call after the collision.
A New York City Fire Department spokesperson stated that one accident victim was transported to the Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, New York. However, the spokesperson did not provide details about the condition of the accident victim.
The dashcam driver stated that she did not know where the car came from or if the driver ran a red light or tried to make a turn.
The dashcam video shows an accident caused by a speeding driver. Several people responded on social media, stating that they have noticed a significant uptick in reckless driving since the coronavirus pandemic began in March. Many drivers have also discussed the value of having a dashboard camera with others engaged in the conversation on social media.
So far, the accident investigator has not clarified why the driver was driving erratically and swerving. According to an NYPD spokesman, no arrests were made as of Saturday morning.
