Priest Charged With Sodomizing Young Boy A Catholic priest, no longer active in the Church, is charged with repeatedly sodomizing a young Suffolk County boy. The abuse allegedly took place while 56-year-old Barry E. Ryan, who lives in Florida, was visiting Long Island.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, Ryan was charged with first-degree sodomy and was being arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Friday. The DA said Ryan has confessed to the abuse, which allegedly occurred at a private home on the Island between May and October of last year.
The Brooklyn Diocese notified Suffolk authorities of the alleged abuse last month. Ryan had served as a priest there in the 80s.
The DA said in a written statement by Ryan he revealed he had received in-patient treatment for pedophilia, depression and alcoholism this past year in a Maryland psychiatric hospital.
