The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) accumulates statistics from across the country concerning fatal pedestrian accidents. In 2017, which is the latest data currently available, 5,977 people in the United States died in pedestrian accidents. The frequency with which fatal pedestrian crashes happened is astounding. One person died every 88 minutes in 2017 after they were struck by a car. About 26 percent of all fatal crashes occurred in the three-hour window of 6:00 p.m. to 8:59 p.m. Overall, 75 percent of all fatal pedestrian crashes in 2017 happened in the dark. Twenty-one percent of fatal pedestrian crashes occurred in the daytime, and only two percent of the fatal crashes happened at dusk and dawn.
The age of the pedestrian could play a role in fatal collisions. The NHTSA calculated that 21 percent of pedestrians who died in 2017 were aged 50 to 59. The only other age group with greater representation was over 70-years-old.
In 2017, the NHTSA calculated that 999 people died in traffic crashes in New York State. Tragically, 242 of those people killed were pedestrians.
