NEW YORK CITY, NY – According to an online news report from CBSlocal.com, the FDA provides an updated warning concerning potentially toxic hand sanitizers being sold at Walmart and Target. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the agency expanded its web page that lists several recalled and potentially toxic hand sanitizer products. The coronavirus pandemic created a surge in virus-killing hand sanitizers. In order to meet the demand, companies began producing their own hand sanitizer products and importing various brands for resale. However, many new companies are selling hand sanitizer products that contain a toxic type of alcohol known as methanol.
This past Tuesday, both Walmart and Target stores announced recalls of two hand sanitizers that could be toxic when used by consumers. The hand sanitizers were sold online and, in their stores, nationwide. Walmart’s “Scent Theory” and Target’s “Born Basic” come in a variety of sizes, colors, and scents. These two recalled products increased the total number of hand sanitizer products recalled due to toxic wood alcohol to more than 94. The recalled products contain a “wood alcohol” that is known as methanol. The alcohol is used to manufacture antifreeze and fuel. If methanol is absorbed through the sick, the user could suffer severe reactions such as blindness, vision disturbance, and death.
One of the reasons the recall is so serious is because of the repeated, daily use of the toxic type of alcohol. The exposure is frequent and daily. Health experts are especially concerned because many of these products are not labeled properly, and do not disclose that methanol is contained in the product.
Health experts recommend that consumers stick with soap and water if they are unsure if the hand sanitizer, they purchased contains methanol. The health experts noted that using soap and water is extremely effective at stopping the coronavirus from spreading. Many of the recalled hand sanitizers come from outside of the country, and the FDA has issued a warning to one company in Mexico and placed their products on a do not import list.
The following companies have products listed on the latest FDA recall list:
The FDA warns that the products list on their hand sanitizer recall page could be toxic when ingested or absorbed through the skin.
