SlimQuick and Liver InjuriesSlimQuick is a weight loss supplement marketed to woman which claims to contain a combination of six weight-loss complexes that assist with fat reduction, slow metabolisms, low energy levels, toxins in the body, poor digestion, high stress and regular bowel movements. ‘SlimQuick’ is available in pill and powder forms, and is sold as “SlimQuick Fat Burner, “SlimQuick Caffeine Free” and “SlimQuick Razor.”
It has recently come to our firm’s attention that ‘SlimQuick’ weight loss supplements contain uva urvi (Arctostaphylos uva ursi, also known as Bearberry), an herbal ingredient that could pose a danger to the liver. Uva ursi contains a chemical called hydroquinone that is toxic to the liver and could damage the organ if taken in high doses. Taking a dose of hydroquinone that is greater than 5 grams has been linked to death from liver toxicity. Numerous websites that discuss uva ursi warn that people using this herbal supplement should be under the care of a doctor and carefully follow dosage instructions because of its association with liver toxicity. Most sites also warn that it should not be used for more than five days and for no more than five times in one year (SlimQuick claims the weightloss supplement can be used for up to 16 weeks). Uva ursi also should not be taken by people with liver or kidney problems.
The labels for ‘SlimQuick’ weight loss supplements do not contain any specific warning for liver toxicity, drug induced hepatitis or liver failure. However, the labels do warn that SlimQuick should not be used by people with liver or kidney disorders. The ‘SlimQuick’ label also advises users to stop taking the supplement and inform a doctor immediately if they experience a number of serious symptoms, including a few that can be indicative of liver failure, including nausea, abdominal pain, dark urine, or jaundice.
