MANHATTAN, N.Y. — New York City Police who investigated a fatal collision between a subway train and a 21-year-old adult female say the death appears to be accidental. Officers continue to investigate the death. However, the evidence suggests that the incident happened on Sunday, April 21, 2019, around 3 a.m. at the 14th Street Union Station in Manhattan, according to the New York Daily News.
Investigators said that the 21-year-old woman from East Flatbush, Brooklyn who died was standing on the platform along the tracks of the 14thUnion Street Station when a subway train departing the station pulled her from the platform onto the tracks below after the train dragged her along the platform. News 12 Brooklyn reported that the woman who died got caught on the train as it was leaving the station. The investigating officers identified the train as the Number 6 that was leaving Union Station in a southerly direction.
Officers said that the emergency call came in around 3:00 a.m. Officers indicated that they diverted incoming trains to the express tracks so they could conduct rescue efforts. Officers requested that all electrical power to the tracks be shut off. Police say that the woman was unable to be revived and she died on the tracks.
Although the investigating officers have not announced their final opinion about how the accident happened, they did state that the incident appears to be accidental.
Pedestrian deaths are on the rise across the United States in recent years. One of the most prominent causes of the increase in pedestrian deaths appears to be walking while distracted by cellphones. The officers who investigated this tragic accident did not attribute the woman’s death to cellphone use. However, people are increasingly distracted by their cellphones and subway riders should be aware of the possible dangers of walking around distracted by their cellphone.
