Zyban Birth Defects
Zyban is a non-nicotine smoking cessation aid that was first marketed by GlaxoSmithKline in 1987. GlaxoSmithKline also markets bupropion as a treatment for depression and seasonal affective disorder under the name Wellbutrin. Buproprion is also sometimes used off-label for weight loss, bipolar depression, ADD/ADHD, Crohn’s disease, restless leg syndrome (RLS), pathological gambling, and SSRI/SNRI-induced sexual dysfunction.
Evidence of a link between Zyban and birth defects has been accumulating ever since buproprion came on the market. In 1997 Glaxo created the Bupropion Pregnancy Registry to track pregnancy outcomes among expectant mothers who took either Wellbutrin or Zyban. By March 31, 2008 GlaxoSmithKline determined that 3.6% of the infants born to mothers who took Wellbutrin or Zyban during the first trimester had birth defects.American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology found a positive link between Wellbutrin and Zyban in early pregnancy and cardiac birth defects. In particular, women who took buproprion in the early months of pregnancy had more than double the risk of having a child with heart defects known as left outflow tract defects, compared with infants whose mothers had not used the drug.

- Undescended testes in males
