Nursing Home Worker Abusing A Resident. A former worker at a nursing home in Pennsylvania has been sentenced to three to 12 months in prison for abusing a resident. According to WNEP16, former certified nursing assistant Joshua Wegielewski was accused of injuring a 76-year-old dementia patient at the Green Ridge Gardens nursing home in Scranton last October.

Earlier this year, WNEP16 reported that Wegielewski was facing trial for the alleged abuse. Court papers indicate that the patient suffered from multiple bruises on her arms and wrists after being dragged by Wegielewski. Documents also show that he and a coworker restrained the patient in her room by holding the door shut. According to court papers, the incident was caught on cameras inside the nursing home.

Bruises Appeared On The Victim

Multiple bruises appeared on the victim’s wrist, arm and shoulder, an investigator with the Agency on Aging said to the judge during a preliminary hearing. Assistant district attorney Susan Price said “Not only did he restrain her in her room, but the way he grabbed her and forced her and pushed her into the room and caused her bruising was uncalled for,” according to WNEP16.

Sadly, cases of nursing home abuse and neglect are all too common. Last summer, nine people were arrested and indicted in connection with the death of a New York nursing home resident. The victim, Aurelia Rios, died at the Medford Multicare Center for temporary rehab in 2012. Rios had been previously hospitalized for a breathing disorder, and her doctor gave explicit instructions for her to be hooked up to a ventilator at night. A licensed nurse failed to read these orders the patient suffocated. Furthermore, staff members allegedly failed to response to visual and audio alarms for nearly two hours despite being near the monitors.
