This data is based on 2020 statistics for metropolitan areas from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In the beginning of 2020, the median sale price for new homes in the United States increased to a record high of $348,200. Based on the data, the states in both the south and the west are investing the most in new home construction.
In Idaho and Utah, both of these states exceeded the national rate of home construction (41.9 units per 10,000 residents) by more than 100 percent. Meanwhile, the states in the Northeast have been constructing the fewest new homes per capita, as these states have seen their populations either decline or stay stagnant.
