Long Island Auto Accidents and Injuries
Car accidents occur all too frequently on Long Island. Many times, vehicle occupants experience serious or fatal injuries. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) compiled by law enforcement, there were 879 fatal car accidents on Long Island from 2012 to 2015, Newsday reports. A total of 926 people died in these accidents.
Speeding and drunk driving were factors that contributed to deadly Long Island car crashes. Among accidents where at least one driver’s blood alcohol content was reported, drunken driving accounted for 27.8 percent of all fatalities. In car accidents where at least one driver’s speed was reported, speeding contributed to 25.3 percent of all deaths. Among accidents where both factors were reported, speeding and drunk driving accounted for 13.3 percent of car accident fatalities.
Other factors that increase the risk of car accidents include distracted driving, reckless driving, drowsy driving and aggressive driving. Recent statistics from the NHTSA show that traffic deaths are increasing nationwide. During the first half of 2016, the number of traffic deaths increased 10 percent compared to the same period in 2015.
Each accident is different, but certain types of injuries tend to occur more frequently in car accidents. Among head and back injuries, for example, car accident victims often suffer from traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The severity of a TBI can vary from a mild concussion, or long-lasting cognitive problems (issues with thinking and memory). Injuries to the back, including spinal cord injuries or a herniated disk, are also common. Serious spinal cord injuries can cause paralysis.
During a rear-end collision, whiplash commonly occurs due to the sudden and fast movement of the car. Other common car accident injuries include blunt force trauma to the chest, broken bones, and internal injuries.
Long Island’s Most Deadly Roads: Blood Alley and the Southern State Parkway
Some Long Island roads are especially prone to car accidents. In fact, a 10-mile stretch on the Southern State Parkway between Exit 17 in Malverne and Exit 32 in South Farmingdale has earned the morbid nickname “Blood Alley” due to the high rate of deadly car crashes. This stretch is dangerous for several reasons. Drivers are placed into narrow lanes and are forced to make sudden, sharp turns. Additionally, the entrance and exit ramps in this area are short. Poor lighting and speeding also increase the likelihood of an accident.
Many car accidents occur on the Southern State Parkway. It is one of the busiest roads on Long Island. The New York State Department of Transportation conducted a 2016 showing that the Southern State Parkway saw 10,500 accidents over a 5-year period. More than 3,000 of these car accidents caused injuries; 32 accidents resulted in death.
The high rate of car accidents on the Southern State Parkway has prompted officials to take action. Fios1 reported in March 2017 that state and local officials are trying to pass a bill addressing traffic injuries and fatalities on the parkway. “The long and short of the bill is really saying, ‘Hey look, there are a lot of problems on this road, a lot of activity. Let’s take a look at what’s contributing to that and identify those things that we can correct,'” said Sen. John Brooks.
State Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages commented, “We all have to drive, so why not do it in a safe manner? We need the State Department of Transportation to step up and protect our fellow Long Islanders,” The Southern State Parkway opened in 1927. It has essentially remained the same since that time.
What to Do If Injured in a Long Island Car Accident
The Long Island car accident lawyers at Parker Waichman have several general recommendations if you were involved in a car accident. The most important thing to do is receive medical treatment for any injuries you may have sustained. Keep in mind that not all injuries manifest immediately, so consider seeing a doctor even if you feel fine. In addition to helping you with your recovery, medical records of your injury will help with your injury claim. The insurance company will want proof of your injury.
You should also document the accident as best you can. Take pictures of your injury, the damage to the vehicles, and the scene. Be sure to obtain the other driver’s contact information, including their license plate number. If there are any eyewitnesses around, it can be helpful to get a statement from them as well.
Call the police if anyone is injured or if there is significant damage to the vehicles or property. Very minor accidents do not necessarily require you to contact the authorities. If you are unsure about whether you should contact them, it is best to err on the side of caution can call them anyway. You may think the damage to your car is trivial, but then discover that it costs thousands later at the auto shop.
Do not apologize for the accident, as this can be used against you later. Remember, the insurance company wants any reason to say that the accident was your fault. You can check to make sure nobody was injured, but do not say “sorry” for the accident.
