HOLBROOK, Long Island, N.Y. — A man attempting to cross Veterans Memorial Highway in Holbrook who was struck by an oncoming motorist has died. Newsday reported that the incident happened on Monday, April 15, 2019, around 8:50 p.m. at the intersection with Broadway Avenue. Newsday also said that the pedestrian was a male and was 37-years-of-age when he died. Accident investigators from the Suffolk County police department have launched an investigation into the fatal crash. Their investigation is not complete at this time. The officers did not provide a deadline for their findings. Police did not arrest the female motorist who hit the pedestrian.
Detectives from the Suffolk County police department’s Fifth Precinct asked for witnesses to come forward and provide information regarding the fatal pedestrian accident that occurred Monday night. The detectives’ preliminary investigation shows that the 37-year-old pedestrian tried to cross Veterans Memorial Highway around 8:50 p.m. Monday when a Nissan headed east struck the man. Ambulance personnel transported the stricken pedestrian to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue. Physicians at the hospital pronounced the man dead from his injuries.
Detectives continue their investigation into the matter. A photograph taken at the scene of the crash suggests that the vehicle contacted the pedestrian on the driver’s front quarter at or around the headlight housing. The picture also shows the windshield on the driver’s side smashed as well. The car is angled to the right and in between lanes suggesting that the driver took evasive action to avoid hitting the pedestrian. Additionally, no crosswalk may be seen in the photograph at the location of the crash.
The female driver stayed at the scene of the accident. She did not sustain any injuries and officers impounded her vehicle to perform standard safety checks. The investigating detectives did not disclose their findings to the media. The investigation continues.
