Motorcyclist suffers serious injuries

LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK – As reported online by abc7ny.com, a motorcyclist sustained serious injuries after being struck by a hit-and-run vehicle that was leaving a 7-eleven parking lot.

Long Island police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that left a 63-year-old motorcyclist with serious injuries.  On April 27, 2019, the 63-year-old victim was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle on Long Island when he was struck by a vehicle leaving a 7-eleven parking lot.

The impact of this initial crash threw the motorcyclist into a westbound lane of oncoming traffic, where he was struck by another vehicle driven by a 54-year-old Bay Shore woman who stopped and remained at the scene of the crash.

According to local police, the vehicle that left the 7-eleven parking lot fled the scene of the accident by traveling westbound on Pine Aire Boulevard and is described as a black four-door sedan.  Police are still searching for this vehicle.  At this time, no criminal charges have been filed relating to this accident.  Additionally, details of the victim’s injuries and his prognosis are unknown.

Does New York City Suffer From a Hit-and-Run Epidemic?

According to citylimits.org, New York City has seen an improvement in the number of pedestrian accidents over the past few years, with 2017 having the lowest number of pedestrian deaths since record-keeping began in 1910. However, the favorable data on the reduction in pedestrian accident deaths does not reveal that New York City has what the article calls a “hit-and-run epidemic.”

Data provided by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) indicates that the number of hit-and-run accidents in New York City has increased by approximately twenty-six (26) percent in the past five years. Also, the NYPD is having trouble catching hit-and-run drivers, admitting that only nine (9) percent of hit-and-run drivers who have injured someone in an accident are ultimately arrested.
