According to an online news article posted on streetsblog.org, another tragic, fatal cycling accident occurred in New York City.
The NYPD’s initial accident report states that a truck driver struck and killed a 41-year-old cyclist who was traveling on First Avenue in East Harlem. The accident occurred Friday morning at approximately 8:30.
The news report asserts that the police are wrongfully accusing the cyclist of traveling in the wrong direction prior to the collision by E. 118th Street.
The news report also stated that the NYPD allegedly ignored previous reports of reckless driving connected with the truck involved in the accident and that these previous behaviors may have contributed to the cyclist’s death.
The NYPD stated the truck was traveling northbound along First Avenue in the lane reserved for buses only when the truck driver hit the cyclist. The cyclist has not been identified in the news report. Police stated that the cyclist was traveling in the wrong direction.
However, the police report allegedly does not state whether the truck driver was driving distracted or was speeding, which the news report claims to be a reasonable probability due to the 15o+ traffic violations in the past 6 years. Of those violations, there were numerous traffic violations for red light running, speeding, and other traffic violations.
These reports were allegedly provided by the city’s camera violation database.
Police stated that the truck driver remained at the scene of the accident- However, he was not issued a ticket or was charged with a criminal offense or given a traffic court summons.
The news report states that part of First Avenue has a lengthy history of deadly accidents involving pedestrians and bikers. In the 10 blocks between 110th and 120th streets, there have been dozens of injuries and nearly 200 accidents, according to Crash Mapper.
