Although intersections only account for a relatively low percentage of road systems in the United States, each year a significant number of crashes take place where two roads cross. A study carried out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggests that approximately 40 percent of the total number of traffic accidents in the United States happen at intersections. Left turns are the event that leads to the most intersection vehicle collisions. In fact, more than one out of five accidents, or 22.2%, occur within the context of a vehicle trying to make a left-hand turn.
There are many safer options for intersections. Traffic controls like roundabouts have far fewer and less severe accidents. Studies have continuously shown that traditional intersections are basically a recipe for disaster. However, many of the proven alternatives seem unfamiliar and would prove expensive to implement. Still, many places are now focused on acknowledging the fact that traffic deaths are preventable tragedies and that some big changes may be necessary. New York City’s Vision Zero initiative has shown that it is possible to curb the number of traffic fatalities in the city.
