Fatal hit and run accident in Queens
QUEENS, N.Y. — A surveillance camera captured the moments shortly after a violent collision that killed a 72-year-old woman who was on her way home from work. The surveillance camera recorded a Lexus sedan hurtling down 111th Avenue in South Ozone Park, heavily damaged with smoke emitting from the engine compartment. The video also shows the driver of the demolished Lexus sedan open the driver’s door and escape down the street. In the meantime, a 72-year-old woman who was returning home from her cleaning job at a higher-end perfume counter was violently thrown out of the car in which she was riding and died. According to a piece appearing in the New York Daily News, the fatal collision happened around 1:25 a.m. New York City police officers persist in finding leads to capture the driver of the Lexus who fled that horrific wreck.
NYPD officers said that the woman who died was a passenger in a Honda SUV and was getting a ride home from an acquaintance. They were traveling north on 125thStreet when the Lexus sedan flew through a red light and crushed the Honda SUV. The impact destroyed the rear end of the Honda. Witnesses say that the frame of the vehicle was visible. Similarly, the front end of the Lexus was demolished as well.
The impact cast the deceased woman out of the SUV and onto the street. She came to rest under a parked car. Meanwhile, the driver of the Honda SUV survived the crash. She received ambulance transportation to the hospital and was severely injured. Good Samaritans raced to help the woman who was on the ground. Witnesses say she was not moving and could tell she was not breathing. Tragically, the 72-year-old woman was about one block away from home and a couple of months away from retiring from her job.
NYPD investigators did not disclose whether they had any leads on the identity of the driver of the Lexus.
