The scene of the crash was found to be near the gate to Wolfe’s Pond Park. Fire and rescue crews transported three injured parties to Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze for treatment. SILIVE.com analyzed traffic accident statistics for Staten Island auto accidents maintained by the City of New York as well as the State of New York for the years 2015 and 2016. Interestingly, SILIVE.com found a discrepancy between the number of crashes recorded by the City of New York compared to the State of New York for Staten Island.
The City of New York listed well over a thousand more crashes for each year than did the State of New York. Notwithstanding, SILIVE.com determined that the leading cause of the accident for both 2015 and 2016 on Staten Island was driver distraction. The news outlet determined that in 2015 citing a second vehicle for a traffic violation was the second leading cause of Staten Island crashes in 2015 and failing to yield was the third most-cited cause.
In 2016, driver distraction maintained the top spot. However, not yielding to the right of way was the second leading cause of accidents and unsafe backing was listed at the third leading cause of crashes.
