New York, NY- Abc7ny.com writes that a collision in the Flat Iron District in New York led to seven people sustaining injuries. The crash started when a car struck several people and then drove into another vehicle.
A Subaru traveling eastbound on 23rd street hit three people who were at the crosswalk waiting to cross the road. The car then hit a vehicle that was stopped at a red light in the westbound lanes on 23rd Street.
Police believe that the driver involved in the accident may have had a medical problem that caused him or her to drive so erratically.
Two of the victims are in the hospital in serious condition, and five are now stable.
Medical conditions are a rare cause of crashes. Most car crashes are caused by human error. In total, only a little over one percent of car accidents are the result of a medical episode, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Sometimes crashes that are caused by a medical condition create liability issues. A person cannot be held liable for something that they did not have control over. However, if the driver knew he or she had a medical condition that could make driving unsafe, then the driver might be liable for driving in the first place. The NHTSA states that nearly two-thirds of drivers who sustained medical episodes that caused car crashes had preexisting medical conditions of which they were aware of when they drove.
Medical episodes that often lead to these emergencies include blackouts. Seizures and diabetic reactions. Drivers over 65 have a higher risk of a medical emergency-related crash than do younger drivers.
