Pedestrian tragically killed in NY
MANHATTAN, N.Y. — A pickup truck ran down and killed a 67-year-old woman in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. The woman passed away after clinging to life in a Manhattan hospital according to an article appearing in the New York Post. The accident appeared to have happened either in or just adjacent to a crosswalk on West 15thStreet, near Sixth Avenue. Another woman was also hurt in the incident. She is expected to survive. Police have not rendered a final report about the accident.
The initial police investigative reports regarding the fatal pedestrian accident in Chelsea indicate that the crash happened around 9 p.m. Police accident investigators said that two women tried to cross the street in front of a 2011 Chevy Silverado pickup truck. The pickup had New Jersey plates according to the photo appearing on the New York Post website. The photo shows the large pickup stopped across the crosswalk. Damage is visible to the passenger’s side front bumper and light housing. The photo also shows an officer using a tool to take measurements of the truck.
Witness statements relayed to police that the truck driver turned left while he had the green light and hit the two women in the crosswalk. The police were not clear if the women tried to cross contrary to the signals. The driver of the large pickup truck cooperated with police investigators.
The NYPD accident squad continues to examine the evidence it gathered in the case. Police are interested in learning when the women began to cross the street relative to the crossing signals and the green light that signaled the pickup truck to proceed.
The woman who died was 67 years old. Rescuers rushed her to Bellevue Hospital for care. She survived for two days after the accident. The 59-year-old female who was walking with the woman who died also received medical care at Bellevue Hospital. Preliminary reports suggest she suffered a laceration to her head. She is expected to survive the injury.
