BRONX, NY- The nydailynews.com reports that a 59-year-old driver was killed in a three-car crash in the Bronx on Sunday, September 30, 2018. The driver of one of the vehicles involved in the accident, a man driving a BMW, ran away from the crash site and into the Woodlawn Cemetery.
The driver who fled the scene was heading southbound on Jerome Avenue when he struck a silver Honda SUV at about 8:20 p.m. The driver of the Honda was identified as a 70-year-old woman. After hitting the Honda, the driver of the BMW lost control of the vehicle and struck the victim’s 1995 gold Toyota.
The driver of the BMW and a passenger both then fled the scene of the accident on foot. The two men were described as being in their early twenties or late teens.
Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to the Montefiore Medical Center but were not able to save him.
Law enforcement have begun searching for the driver who caused the collision and the passenger who was in the vehicle at the time.
Hit-and-run crashes are common in New York City. The number of drivers who illegally flee the scene of collisions in the city has increased by approximately 26 percent in the last five years. The increase occurred even while pedestrian fatalities and overall traffic deaths have sharply declined thanks to the Vision Zero initiative.
In 2017, over 5,000 people sustained injuries in crashes involving hit-and-run drivers. Only 9 percent of drivers who flee the scene of injury-causing crashes are ultimately caught. Even in deadly crashes, only 24 out of 62 hit-and-run drivers were ever arrested.
New York has taken steps to address the issue, including the introduction of an alert program which can use information from the public to help find hit-and-run drivers.
