A recall has been issued on more than 50,000 high-end baby strollers because they pose serious injury risks to the children they’re intended to carry.
According to an AP report on a recall notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Bugaboo International, the call-back includes the company’s Cameleon and Donkey model baby strollers. These strollers were sold at premium prices at retail locations across the country and in Canada, as well as through the manufacturer’s Web site.
The recall was deemed necessary when it was realized the carrycot/seat carry handle can become disengaged and cause the handle to detach. If this happens, a child in one of these strollers could fall or choke. Bugaboo has 58 reports of the carry handle on either one of these model strollers detaching but no injuries have accompanied those reports.
Approximately 46,300 of the recall strollers were sold in the U.S. and another 4,400 or so in Canada. They were available at retail stores like Buy Buy Baby, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Toys R Us. Bugaboo International also sold the strollers on its Web site.
The Cameleon model of stroller was available to consumers from September 2009 through June 2012. It sold for about $980. The Donkey model of Bugaboo stroller was available more recently, from January 2011 until December 2012. It sold at the premium prices between $1,200 and $1,600. The strollers were sold with a base, sun canopy and other accessories in various colors. A fabric tag on the side of the sun canopy has Bugaboo and the model name, according to recall information gathered by AP from the CPSC notice.
To avoid this injury risk, consumers can remove the carry handle from the strollers. They should contact Bugaboo for a replacement handle that eliminates the risk that prompted the recall. The strollers can be used without the handle.
It is important to note that, due to the high price tag on this item and considering that items designed for caring for babies and toddlers are often shared among friends or passed-on to family members, people who may have purchased their stroller at a second-hand store or received it from a friend or family member should check to see if theirs is included in the recall.
