A recall of Children’s “Love Tester†Mood Rings and Necklaces has been implemented by D&D Distributing-Wholesale due to risk of lead exposure, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced. The CPSC is advising consumers to stop using recalled products immediately and notes that it’s illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
About 19,000 “Love Tester” Mood Rings and 4,000 “Love Tester Necklaces, which were manufactured in China, have been recalled by the importer, D&D Distributing-Wholesale Inc., of Tacoma, Washington. The metal rings and necklaces contain high levels of lead.
Lead causes behavioral and learning problems, slowed growth, digestive problems, hearing problems, headaches, mental and physical retardation, and behavioral and other health problems. Of particular concern is the developing brain because negative influences can have long-lasting effects and can continue well into puberty and beyond. Lead is known to cause cancer and reproductive harm and, in adults, can damage the nervous system. Lead poisoning can cause seizure, coma, and death.
Once poisoned by lead, no organ system is immune; experts agree, there is no safe level of lead.
Although no adverse reactions or incidents have been reported, to date, the effects of lead exposure are not always immediately evident.
This recall involves a mood necklace which is 18 inches in length and an adjustable ring. The products change colors when the user’s “mood” changes. “Love Tester” and “Are You In the Mood” are labeled on the products’ packaging. The products are sold separately and were sold for about $4 at small retail stores nationwide from September 2005 through June 2010.
The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately take the recalled jewelry away from children and return to the store where purchased to receive a full refund or replacement product. D&D Distributing-Wholesale can be reached toll-free at (800) 262-9435 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time, Monday through Friday or at the firm’s website at www.dddist.com.
