A drunken hit-and-run driver injured three students at Stony Brook University Monday night, causing minor injuries. University Police Chief Robert J. Lenahan said the driver is a 23-year-old man from Palm Coast, Florida. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. He was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury after the crash.
His arraignment was held Tuesday in First District Court in Central Islip, Newsday reports. The students were in a 2010 Toyota at the intersection of Marburger and South drives when they were struck by the drunk driver, driving a 2003 Dodge pickup truck. The man fled the scene, but was later identified near Circle Road and Campus Drive.
Police conducted a field sobriety test, and found that the man was intoxicated. He was arrested at the scene.
The victims were treated at Stony Brook University Hospital for undisclosed injuries. The drunk driver is due back in court Sept. 20.
Last month, a woman was killed by a drunken driver while stranded on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. The woman, a mother of four from Guinea, went flying over the guardrail when the drunk driver struck a vehicle pulled over on the shoulder, triggering a chain reaction. Family members estimate the man was going at least 100 mph. They also report that the driver, a 43-year-old man, tried to flee the scene on foot but was held by the victim’s family members.
