Another children’s product that was manufactured in China is being recalled, just weeks before the biggest gift-giving day of the year. About 66,000 Evenflo ExerSaucer® 1-2-3 Tea for Me™ Activity Learning Centers have been recalled in the United States; 13,660 were recalled in Canada. The maker of the defective ExerSaucer® 1-2-3 Tea for Me™ Activity Learning Centers is Evenflo Co. Inc., of Miamisburg, Ohio. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall.
Evenflo ExerSaucer® 1-2-3 Tea for Me™ Activity Learning Centers were recalled because the candle flame attached to the top of the cake toy can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. To date, Evenflo has received 11 reports of the toy flames detaching. Five of the incidents occurred in the United States and six in Canada. No injuries have been reported.
We have long been discussing the issue with dangerous and defective products making their way into the United States from China. This bears repeating, especially given that we are in the midst of heavy holiday shopping and children’s products and toys, which originated in China, continue to be recalled.
In 2008, nearly 80 percent of all product recalls in the United States involved imports from China. Products such as dog food, baby formula, toys with lead paint, and even pharmaceuticals like heparin have been found to have been made with toxic materials and other counterfeit ingredients that have long been putting United States consumers at significant risk. Also making news is the ongoing Chinese drywall disaster involving imports from that country.
This particular recall involves Evenflo ExerSaucer® 1-2-3 Tea for Me™ Activity Learning Centers. The tea party-themed toys have a two-tier cake that is light blue, dark pink, and yellow. Models included in the recall are 6161834 and 6161920. The model numbers are printed on the packaging and on a label located on the underside of the base of the product. The recommended age for use of this product is four months to walking. The recalled Evenflo ExerSaucer® 1-2-3 Tea for Me™ Activity Learning Centers were sold at Toys “R†Us and juvenile product stores nationwide from December 2007 through March 2009 for about $70.
The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately remove the cake toy from the product and contact Evenflo to receive a free replacement toy. The ExerSaucer® may continue to be used without the cake toy. Evenflo can be reached, toll-free, at 1-800-233-5921 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, or at the firm’s Web site at safety.evenflo.com.
