IKEA, the Swedish home furnishings company, just issued a recall for over 1 million highchair safety belts for fall hazard.
The Associated Press (AP) reports that about 1.2 million faulty highchairs have been recalled following reports of children falling out of their seats when the belts’ buckle opened unexpectedly.
“The high chair belt can open unexpectedly in use, creating a fall hazard,” IKEA Canada said in a statement it released this morning wrote CTV.
Ylva Magnusson, IKEA spokeswoman, confirmed that IKEA received eight incident reports concerning the defective belt buckle on its ANTILOP high chair. Three children suffered minor injuries, said the AP. According to Magnusson, the largest number of chairs were sold in Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden. The ANTILOP chairs were sold in 46 countries.
The issue specifically involves IKEA ANTILOP chairs made by one Chinese manufacturer, said the AP. The supplier number involved is 17389 and the manufacturing dates impacted are from July 2007 through November 2009.
According to CTV, the production code dates involved are between 0607-0911 (YYMM).
Customers who purchased the defective ANTILOP chairs, which retailed for $19.99, are urged to contact IKEA for an exchange, or a refund.
