Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/bus_accidents">Missouri school bus crash that killed two people yesterday. The collision killed a 15-year-old girl on one of two school buses involved of the accident, as well as the driver of another vehicle. Dozens of others were injured.
The accident occurred on eastbound I-44 in Gray Summit, Missouri, bout 40 miles west of St. Louis, around 10:15 a.m. local time yesterday. The crash involved the school buses, a tractor-trailer, and a pickup, which became wedged under one of the school buses.
The school buses were carrying students from John F. Hodge High in St. James. The students, who had been attending band camp, were on their way to a Six Flags amusement park.
According to the Associated Press, the accident happened when the pickup truck rear-ended a semi cab that had slowed down because it was nearing a construction zone. One of the buses slammed into the back of the pickup, then was launched on top of it after it was rear-ended by the second bus.
Fifteen-year-old Jessica Brinker, who was traveling in the first bus, and 19-year-old Daniel Schatz, were killed in the accident. At least 50 students were also treated for mostly minor injuries. However, two did remain hospitalized last night.
Thirty-six people were originally taken to Cardinal Glennon and by late evening, all but one were released. Of six victims sent to St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, five were released and one was transferred to St. Louis Children’s Hospital. That individual, a 16-year-old girl, is listed in stable condition.
Four other victims were taken with minor injuries to St. Clare Health Center in Fenton, the Associated Press said.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board have arrived at the scene. They will look into school bus safety and construction zone safety in the course of their investigation, the Associated Press said.
