Kawasaki has issued a recall of off-highway vehicles for crash risk, said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The recall involves about 2,000 Teryx Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles, which were manufactured in the United States; distributed by Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., of Irvine, California; and sold at Kawasaki dealers, nationwide, from August 2011 through March 2012. The recalled Kawasaki Teryx vehicles retailed for $10,600-$12,000.
The recalled Kawasaki off-highway vehicles were incorrectly labeled as having a higher occupant capacity than is safe. Operating the vehicle with additional occupants creates an injury or death hazard. To date, no incidents or injuries have been reported.
The recalled Kawasaki vehicles are model year 2012 Kawasaki four-wheel recreational off-highway vehicles with side-by-side seating for two people and automobile style controls. Models Teryx 750 FI 4×4, Teryx 750 FI 4×4 LE, Teryx 750 FI 750 4×4 LE SGE, and Teryx 750 FI 4×4 Sport are involved. The model type is printed on the vehicle’s hood. The recalled vehicles are green, red, gray, silver, black, or camouflage (khaki).
Consumers will receive a replacement glove compartment cover in the mail. The replacement cover indicates the correct occupant capacity and can be installed by consumers and comes with instructions; consumers can also contact their Kawasaki dealer to schedule a free installation. Kawasaki is also contacting its customers directly.
In March, we wrote that Kawasaki USA issued a recall for its Utility Vehicles due to fire hazard. About 3,900 Kawasaki Utility Vehicles were recalled. Those faulty Utility Vehicles were manufactured in the United States; distributed by Kawasaki Motors Corp. USA, of Irvine, California; and sold at Kawasaki dealers, nationwide, from June 2011 to February 2012 for between $6,700 and $8,200. The recalled Utility Vehicle’s fuel tube can scrape against the air cleaner housing and develop holes, posing a fire hazard.
In 2010, Kawasaki Motors Corp. recalled about 4,000 KLX110 Off-Road Motorcycles over a faulty housing in which the ignition switch could allow water to enter and activate the electric starter unintentionally. The defect posed a serious hazard of injury or death.
