While the potential for serious health problems is low, said the FDA, some consumers are sensitive to the uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell and should not eat the recalled products because of possible temporary symptoms, including nausea and diarrhea. No other Kellogg’s products are part of this recall. The recalled products were distributed nationwide. David Mackay, president and chief executive officer of the Kellogg Company said, “We apologize to our consumers and our customers and are working diligently to ensure that the affected products are rapidly removed from the marketplace.” Kellogg Consumer Response Center can be reached, toll-free at 888-801-4163 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Eastern time.
Reuters pointed out that regulators have been criticized this year for other high-profile recalls involving products children use. For instance, said Reuters, Johnson & Johnson recalled 40 popular children and infant nonprescription products, including Tylenol and Motrin. “When foods that are popular among kids are being recalled in large volumes, it is clear that our food safety system is not working,” U.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro said in an email, quoted Reuters.
According to DeLauro, 28 million boxes of Kellogg cereal became involved after 20 people complained of a “waxy†smell and flavor from the cereal box liners; five of these people reported nausea and vomiting.
