The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has just announced two recalls of <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/product_liability">defective children’s products for violation of the lead standard and to choking hazards. Both recalled items—Axiom Children’s Sunglasses and Infantino Lion and Lamb Grabby Rattlesâ„¢ – were manufactured in China.
Approximately 5,300 lead-tainted Children’s Sunglasses, which were made in China and imported by Axiom International Inc., of Billings, Montana have been recalled because the surface paint on the recalled sunglasses can contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard. The two-tone sunglasses come in Spiderweb Blue and Spiderweb Red and have a spider web etched between the eyes and the words “Made in China†engraved on the right-hand side of the frame. The lead-tainted Children’s Sunglasses were sold by party, hardware, and discount dollar stores nationwide from May 2007 through August 2008 for between $1 and $5. The CPSC is advising consumer to immediately take the lead-tainted, recalled sunglasses away from children and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Axiom can be reached toll-free at (800) 262-0599 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. CT Monday through Friday via its Website at www.axiomintl.com.
In children and fetuses, lead exposure can cause brain and nervous system damage, behavioral and learning problems, slowed growth, hearing problems, headaches, mental and physical retardation, and behavioral and other health problems. Lead is also known to cause cancer and reproductive harm and, in adults, lead can damage the nervous system.
Also, an expanded recall for an additional 131,000 Infantino Lion and Lamb Grabby Rattles™ has been implemented. The original recall, which occurred in March 2008, involved 20,000 Infantino rattles. The Infantino Lion and Lamb Grabby Rattles™ were made by Infantino LLC, of San Diego, California and manufactured in China. Infantino has received 10 reports of the tailpiece on the rattle detaching since March 2008; this detaching poses a choking hazard to young children.
The recalled Infantino Lamb and Lion Grabby Rattles™ are shaped like either a lamb or a lion and each has a ring-shaped body and an Infantino elliptical logo stamped on the front right foot of the recalled rattle. Rattles without tails on the animals and products with production codes of 0108 and 0508 are not affected by this recall. Also, the production code is printed behind the ear in a dial format with the year (08) in the middle of a circle and an arrow pointing to the number on the circle (01 or 05) that indicates the month. The recalled Infantino Lion and Lamb Grabby Rattles™ were sold at Wal-Mart, Babies “R†Us, and other specialty stores nationwide from May 2007 through September 2008 and retailed for between $3 and $4. The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately take the recalled Infantino Lion and Lamb Grabby Rattles™ rattles away from young children and contact Infantino for a replacement rattle or a product of equal value. Infantino can be reached toll-free at (888) 808-3111 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. PT Monday through Friday or at its Website at www.infantino.com.
