Pierre Foods just issued a recall of one lot–320 cases—of PierreTM pb jamwich, crustless peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches, over concerns that there have been contaminated with <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/listeria">Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just announced.
The sandwiches were distributed to Giant-Carlisle stores in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
The PierreTM pb jamwich is sold in the freezer section of the grocery store in a 12-count red carton. The product in question is stamped “Best if purchased by 03-11-2011†in the lower right hand corner. The UPC code is 7599921368.
This recall is being conducted after Listeria monocytogenes was detected in one product sample. After discussions with the FDA, Pierre Foods elected to recall the product to ensure consumer safety. There have been no reported illnesses or consumer complaints, to date; however, it is important to note that it can take some time for the symptoms of Listeria poisoning to manifest.
Any consumer with the “Best if purchased by 03-11-2011†product in their freezer is advised to return the recalled product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Pierre Foods can be reached, toll-free, at 1.800.982.7091 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
As we’ve previously explained, for susceptible populations and the elderly, food poisoning infection with the
Listeria pathogen can cause significant illness linked to issues with the central nervous system as well as the developing fetus and placenta. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause Listeriosis, a potentially fatal foodborne Illness. While healthy people rarely contract Listeriosis, the symptoms of Listeria poisoning are high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, abdominal cramps and pain, and diarrhea.
Listeria monocytogenes reportedly infects about 2,500 people in the U.S., killing 500, and is known to result in serious, sometimes fatal, infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly, persons with HIV infection, and those undergoing chemotherapy.
In pregnant women, Listeriosis can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or birth of a baby suffering from the infection. Pregnant women are about 20 times likelier than others to be infected; Listeriosis can kill fetuses, prompt premature births, and can lead to hearing loss or brain damage in newborns, and can prompt neurological effects and cardio respiratory failure in adults, as was revealed in a recent study.
