It is widely known that some anti-depressants can affect sexual functioning in men and women. A new study has found that men taking paroxetine—brand names Seroxat and <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/paxil">Paxil—can experience impaired fertility and sperm damage, says the Chicago Tribune.
The New York research revealed that nearly half of the main taking Seroxat and Paxil tested with increased levels of “sperm fragmentation,†said the Chicago Tribune, which added that the study appears online today in the journal Fertility & Sterility. “It’s fairly well known that SSRI anti-depressants negatively impact erectile function and ejaculation. This study goes one step further, demonstrating that they can cause a major increase in genetic damage to sperm,†said Dr. Peter Schlegel, the study’s senior author and professor of reproductive medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, quoted the Chicago Tribune.
“Although this study doesn’t look directly at fertility, we can infer that as many as half of men taking SSRIs have a reduced ability to conceive. These men should talk with their physicians about their treatment options,†he added, reported the Tribune.
The study looked at 35 healthy men who took paroxetine for five weeks. The men were tested at the start and following the study and less than 10 percent showed abnormal DNA fragmentation at the start, said the Chicago Tribune. When the trial ended, half the men tested positive for signs of abnormal DNA fragmentation, which occurs, said the Chicago Tribune, when “sperm DNA is missing pieces of the genetic code.†Sperm returned to normal with discontinuation of the medication.
Dr. Cigdem Tanrikut theorized that paroxetine slowed the sperm as it traveled through the male reproductive tract, noting that it gets “hung up,†thus aging and becoming damaged, explained the Chicago Tribune.
Meanwhile, we recently reported that use of some anti-depressants—Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft—might interfere with the efficacy of tamoxifen, leading to recurrence of breast cancer. Tamoxifen is used to prevent the return of estrogen-dependent breast tumors. We wrote last month that early research pointed to cardiac arrest and links to antidepressants and some psychiatric drugs.
