Dr. Mehmet Oz is warning against placing your cell phone in your bra, a habit that many women do out of convenience. “When it comes to cell phones, the bra has become the new purse,” Dr. Oz said on an episode of the Dr. Oz show that aired Aug. 26th.
Tiffany Frantz was the guest on Dr. Oz’s show. She has carried her cell phone in her bra every day for hours a day for four years. In 2011, she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 21, with the tumors developing exactly where she carried her phone. She and her mother were shocked given her young age and no known family history of cancer. Genetic testing showed that she did not have an inherited increased risk of cancer. According to KTVU, Tiffany had her left breast removed March 2012. Sadly, the procedure failed to stop the spread of cancer. In February 2013 doctors told her that the cancer had spread to her spine, pelvic bone, ribs and skull. She underwent radiation once more and currently takes cancer drugs and intravenous bone-building treatments.
On a previous episode, Dr. Andrew Weil warned about the potential for increased risk of cancer upon exposure to cell phones and WiFi systems. Although Weil said research has not yet concluded this to be the case, they are more dangerous than we realize.
Even though Tiffany’s oncologist never explicitly said that her cell phone caused the cancer, a similar pattern has been seen in a small group of other young women. Tiffany and her mom are both certain that the cancer was caused by placing her cell phone in her bra.
