A recall has been issued on about 3,400 Can-Am Commander side-by-side off-road vehicles because a defect in the steering system causes it to lose control.
According to a statement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which has issued the recall in conjunction with the makers of the Can-Am vehicles, BRP Mexico S.A. de C.V., of Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, there have been three reports of these off-road vehicles losing control of their steering systems but no injuries resulted from those incidents.
The defect is caused by improper assembly of the steering column to the rack and pinion. This can result in the loss of steering control and puts drivers and passengers at risk of serious injury or death.
The recall action includes the following products manufactured by BRP Mexico: the 2011 Can-Am Commander 800 and 1000 models, the 2011 Can-Am Commander XT 800R and 1000, and the 2011 Can-Am Commander X 1000. It also includes the following 2012 models: the Can-Am Commander 800 and 1000, the Can-Am Commander XT 800 and 1000, the Can-Am Commander X1000, and the Can-Am Commander Limited 1000.
These off-road vehicles were sold at Can-Am dealers nationwide from April 2011 through end of 2012. They sold for between $11,700 and $21,000. They were all manufactured in Mexico. The model name can be found printed on the side panel of these vehicles.
The company and regulators warn owners of these vehicles to stop using them immediately. They are further instructed to contact a BRP dealer to schedule a repair that eliminates this specific defect. The manufacturer says it has notified its customers directly of this recall but some vehicles may have already been sold to a third-party so all Can-Am owners who did not purchase their vehicle directly from a dealer should take note if their vehicle is included in this action.
