A wiper motor recall affects nearly 593,000 Subaru vehicles. In some cases, the vehicles are being recalled for a second time. The problem is that windshield wiper motors can overheat, presenting a fire hazard risk. Certain Legacy and Outback vehicles from the 2010 to 2014 model years are affected by the wiper motor recall.
According to the Associated Press, it is not clear whether the wiper motor issue led to any fires or injuries. Subaru says that parts in the wiper motor cover can interfere with one another as a result of contamination. The wiper motor could overheat if snow or ice blocks the wiper arm from stopping in the correct position. If this occurs, the wipers may be disabled and the cover may melt.
Subaru issued a similar recall in 2011. According to AP, the wiper motor bottom cover can be replaced at dealerships at no cost. However, a schedule for the recall is not complete.
