A large recall of hundreds of thousands of <"https://www.yourlawyer.com/practice_areas/product_liability">Step Stools with Storage, which have been sold by Target, has been expanded over continuing injury reports, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced.
The initial recall, which was announced earlier this month, of defective Step Stools with Storage included about 206,000 stools; the expanded recall now includes about 341,000 units. The original CPSC release can be accessed here.
The defective Step Stools with Storage were manufactured in China, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Thailand; imported by Target Corporation, of Minneapolis, Minneapolis; and sold exclusively at Target stores nationwide and online at Target.com from January 2007 through October 2010 for between $25 and $30. The recall was implemented by Target.
The wooden Step Stools with Storage can break apart or collapse under the weight of the user, which poses a fall hazard. To date, Target has received 27 reports of the stools breaking or collapsing. Of these accidents, 14 children and 8 adults were involved; 5 incidents took place in which the user’s age was unknown. Of the incidents, 2 adults fractured their wrists, and one of those injured also fractured her hip and pelvis; 6 other children and 1 other adult suffered scrapes and bruising.
The wooden step stool is constructed with two steps and comes in an array of colors, such as natural, natural and red, white, pink, blue, and honey. The Circo step stool has a lid on the bottom step that lifts to provide storage. The Do Your Room (DYR) step stool has a lid on the top step that lifts to provide storage.
The step stools measure approximately 13 inches in height by 13 5/8 inches in width by 14 1/8 inches in depth and the Circo or DYR brand name and the UPC number are printed on a label found beneath the step stool.
Target is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled step stools and return them to any Target store to receive a full refund. Target can be reached at 1.800.440.0680 between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Central Time (CT), Monday through Friday, or at the firm’s website at www.target.com.
