The belt buckles contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard. To date, no incidents or injuries have been reported; however, it is important to note that the effects of lead exposure are not always immediately visible and lead poisoning, because it affects so many of the body’s systems, is often confused with other illnesses and problems.
A known neurotoxin, lead exposure can cause brain and nervous system damage in children and fetuses. The toxin also causes behavioral and learning problems, slowed growth, hearing problems, headaches, mental and physical retardation, and behavioral and other health problems. Of particular concern is the developing brain because negative influences can have long-lasting effects and can continue well into puberty and beyond. Lead is known to cause cancer and reproductive harm and, in adults, can damage the nervous system. In high doses, lead poisoning can cause seizure, coma, and death. Once poisoned by lead, no organ system is immune; experts agree that there is no safe level of lead.
Lead poisoning is the greatest environmental health threat to children under the age of six. Children under six face these great risks because their growing bodies absorb lead more easily than adult bodies do.
This recall involves two types of belts: The Cherokee boys’ belts and the Circo girls’ belts. The Cherokee belts are black and brown reversible belts with heavy stitching in sizes M-XL. The belts came in a pack of two with the numbers 202/08/0018, 202/08/0019 or 202/08/0020 embossed on the belt. The girls’ Circo belts are pink and white with heart buckles in sizes XS-L. They were sold in a two-pack with the numbers 202/05/0071, 202/05/0072, 202/05/0073, or 202/05/0074 listed on the product label attached to the inside of the belt.
The belts, which were manufactured in China, were sold exclusively at Target stores and on Target.com nationwide from December 2008 through December 2009 for between $7 and $9
The CPSC is advising consumers to immediately stop using the recalled belts and return them to any Target store to receive a full refund. Target can be reached, toll-free, at (800) 440-0680 between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Central Time (CT), Monday through Friday or at the firm’s website at www.target.com.
