STATEN ISLAND, NY – According to Silive.com, a 67-year-old woman struck a pedestrian and then fled the scene of the accident. The driver, a grandmother from Westerleigh, reportedly hit the 60-year-old man and then drove away from the scene.
The driver is now facing charges for “leaving the scene of an accident where there is a personal injury in connection with the incident.”
The fatal accident took place at about 8:45 in the evening on February 8, 2019. The victim, who was from New Springville, died ten days later from injuries that he sustained in the accident.
The driver reportedly turned herself into the police and said that she was the one who struck the victim. She claims that she was not drinking or on her phone and that she was on her way home after babysitting her grandchildren.
The police arrested the woman on the 15th of February. A surveillance video from the scene of the crash shows the woman in the area at the time of the incident.
The victim suffered head trauma that necessitated brain surgery. Following the crash, he was brought to the Staten Island University Hospital where he later died from the injuries.
The driver’s attorney claims that the incident was an “unfortunate accident, but not a crime.”
The woman has been released from police custody and is scheduled for the court regarding the matter.
According to studies, hit-and-run incidents are on the rise across the United States. There seems to be a higher percentage of impaired drivers, or drivers without licenses who leave the scene of an accident.
