Pedestrian killed in Copiague
COPIAGUE, NY – According to Abc7ny.com, a pedestrian died after she was hit by a car that was backing out of a parking spot on Long Island on Saturday, January 12, 2019. The incident took place in a parking lot located on Merrick Road. The victim was walking in the lot when the car moved backward and ran her over.
Several people who witnessed the accident worked to lift the vehicle off the victim. The woman was then taken to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead. Police reports indicate that the driver of the vehicle accidentally pushed the gas pedal when they intended to hit the brakes. Police have not yet filed any charges in relation to the accident.
Accidents involving vehicles moving in reverse are common. The victims in these crashes are often children who are small and easily end up in a vehicle’s blind spot. Last year a law went into effect that states that all new vehicles must be equipped with rearview cameras that can show the driver what is happening behind them. These cameras greatly reduce the size of a blind spot behind a vehicle, although they do not eliminate it completely.
In recent years, more pedestrians have been killed across the United States. The reason for the uptick in pedestrian deaths is often disputed, but there are a number of factors at play. One is that there are simply more vehicles on the roadways as a result of a strong economy. Another factor is that vehicles are, on average, bigger in the United States. SUVs are outselling smaller vehicles and sedans. Larger vehicles such as SUVs are more likely to cause serious injuries or deaths than are smaller cars.
