Child hit by a car on Long Island
SEAFORD, Long Island, N.Y. — Police officers on Long Island are investigating a pedestrian accident involving a 12-year-old boy. According to ABC 7 NY, the pedestrian accident happened on Friday, April 19, 2019, around 1:40 p.m. Emergency medical services personnel said that the child sustained severe injuries. Fortunately, the boy’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The 32-year-old woman who was driving the car that struck the boy stayed at the scene of the crash and tried to comfort the child while rescuers were on their way to the scene.
ABC 7 NY reported that police believe that the child sprinted into Merrimack Road at Washington Avenue in an attempt to catch up with his friends who crossed before him. The evidence known to police at this time suggests that the child tried to beat the light that had just turned green.
People working in a physical therapy office near the scene of the crash ran out to render aid after they heard a loud collision. Upon running to help, the physical therapy workers saw that the boy was down in the street about 30 feet away from the car. They said a woman attended to the boy and kept him calm while first responders were on their way to the scene. Witnesses said that the physical evidence found at the scene suggests that the boy rolled up on to the hood of the car when he was hit. Witnesses said that the vehicle’s windshield was broken.
According to the same witnesses, the child appeared to have an injury to his arm and possibly a head injury. The victim was reportedly conscious and alert. The Nassau County Police Helicopter provided the airlift to a local trauma center. The woman who struck the child was driving a Toyota Corolla. According to a report filed by WPIX 11, the police did not charge the driver although they did say that they are continuing with their investigation.
