Cyclist killed
LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens, N.Y. — A bicyclist riding in a Long Island City street died in a violent collision with a motor vehicle. The deadly collision happened around 7:50 a.m. on Borden Avenue and Second Street. The cyclist was merely two blocks from his home, according to amny.com. This fatal incident is another in a string of fatal accidents in New York City in 2019. The New York Police Department’s Collision Investigation Squad is handling the investigation, according to the Patch.com.
The investigating detectives from NYPD did not release a significant amount of information about the crash. Police said that a 53-year-old man from Long Island City died after being rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in Queens. The man succumbed to the wounds he sustained when he was riding westerly on Borden Avenue when a 51-year-old woman driving a Chevy Cruze traveling south on Second Street slammed into the man. The bicycle came to rest on the edge of a crosswalk. The woman driving the Chevy stayed at the scene of the accident.
The location where the accident occurred is reputed to be a dangerous area for cyclists. A couple of weeks before the fatal crash, community leaders requested the City construct protected bike lanes in and around the area of the crash in the area of Hunter’s Point South Park. A transportation advocate called the area in which the rider died a “weak link” in the chain of protected bike lanes on Central Boulevard and Second Street. The NY DOT said that it would examine the area to determine if safety upgrades are required.
Police did not place the driver under arrest at the scene, and they have not filed charges to this point.
