Midtown Manhattan Pedestrian Accident

A news report published on wsj.com reports that a multi-car pedestrian accident is being investigated by NYPD and Fire Department. According to the news report, an outdoor dining structure on Second Avenue was destroyed, and several people were injured when a van collided with scaffolding constructed on East 49th Street. The van’s driver was heading southbound along Second Avenue when he crashed into a section of scaffolding at East 49th Street. The accident debris and scaffolding fell on top of and severely injured six adults and two children, a 5-year-old and 7-year-old, who were walking on the sidewalk by the dining structure.

According to the NYPD, all eight pedestrians were injured, and they were all transported to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The van’s driver was arrested by the police and is facing criminal charges. The accident is currently under investigation by law enforcement.

Outdoor dining accidents had become an increasing problem since New York City officials permitted restaurants to construct dining structures along the side of the street or on sidewalks in order to serve customers when the Covid-19 restrictions banned indoor dining last year. Since June of 2020, over 9,500 restaurants have received approval to construct outdoor dining structures.
