Fatal hit and run accident
HEMPSTEAD, NY – According to Newli.com, a woman was killed when she was struck by a vehicle at about 6:40 in the evening in Hempstead. The woman was
walking near the intersection of Westbury Boulevard and Commander Avenue when she was hit.
Reports indicate that the vehicle that struck the victim has not yet been identified.
The woman suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The police are looking for any information about the driver of the vehicle, or the vehicle that hit the victim. Anyone with information regarding the fatal accident is being asked to contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers. Any callers can remain anonymous.
Hit-and-run accidents are common across New York and have been increasing all over the United States. According to studies done by AAA, hit-and-run crashes are at an all-time high.
Sadly, many of these accidents are deadly. The most likely victims are people who are walking or riding bikes when they are struck. This is likely, in part, because these victims are less likely to cause damage to the driver’s vehicle. When a severe crash occurs between two vehicles, the damage done by the other vehicle makes it more obvious that the vehicle was involved in a crash, and in many cases renders the vehicles inoperable.
Even in New York City, where Vision Zero has made great progress in reducing the number of fatal car accidents that take place within the city, the number of hit and run accidents has stayed unsettlingly high. Efforts to curb the number of these crashes have not managed to make any significant progress.
